About the role

Full‑time, short‑term position (21 September 2026 – 15 January 2027) as a Research Assistant conducting critical field work on the Critically Endangered Pukunui/Southern New Zealand Dotterel during the breeding season.

Responsibilities

• Conduct extensive field surveys.
• Monitor birds and nests.
• Set up nest cameras.
• Collect, manage, and enter data.

Skills and experience

• Strong back‑country experience with off‑track navigation skills.
• Experience working independently in remote, exposed locations.
• Bird monitoring experience.
• Data collection and collation skills.
• Good physical fitness and ability to carry a heavy pack.
• Easy‑going with good interpersonal skills.
• Desirable: relevant training or qualification in bird handling and banding.
