The Research Department Viral Zoonoses – One Health, headed by Prof. Dr. Gülşah Gabriel, investigates the interspecies transmission of influenza A viruses from animals to humans and the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis in humans, particularly with regard to risk factors (pregnancy, obesity, and gender dependence). The department aims to identify and characterize viral and cellular determinants driving increased pathogenicity and transmissibility. These insights are further extended to other respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 and RSV, with particular attention to post-acute sequelae and their long-term impact.
