Celo aims to remove barriers to large‑scale adoption of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment. Using a novel address‑based encryption algorithm, the protocol makes sending money as easy as sending a text. Celo uses stable‑value tokens pegged to fiat currencies to minimize volatility. The platform is open and accessible even on a budget Android smartphone. Its first application, Valora, is a social payments and money transfer app for developing markets.
